About Masai Mara National Reserve
Maasai Mara National Reserve is the most famous reserve in the world with an unrivalled flow of wildlife throughout the year. Together with neighbouring private conservancies and the Serengeti in Tanzania, it provides the backdrop to the annual Great Migration of millions of wildebeest, zebra, impala, hyena, buffalo, and their accompanying predators as they search fresh, fertile lands.
Masai Mara National Reserve and Surrounding Conservancies
Maasai Mara itself consists of open grassland together with acacia woodland and occasional bush. It’s also a region where traditionally dressed Maasai still herd cattle and goats as they have done for many centuries before. The popularity of the Maasai Mara leads to a high number of visitors during the months of June to October when the wildebeest start to arrive in search of fresh pastures from the Serengeti in Tanzania. It is an incredible experience to witness this spectacle, and the over 100 lodges and camps in the region tend to get booked up well in advance, so early booking is encouraged, but as experienced safari goers remark, it is well worth it with incredible game viewing opportunities. For those that prefer to avoid the rush, wildlife viewing is plentiful throughout the year and visitors will not leave disappointed.
You will be collected early from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or a city hotel and depart for Samburu at 0800hrs, heading north, you'll pass near Thika and continue north through some breathtaking scenery dotted with rushing mountain streams and fields of tea and coffee. After Nanyuki town, you'll continue north and eventually reach a dusty outpost known as Isiolo, the last major stop on the journey into the remote northern frontier district. From here it's a fairly short hop to Samburu. Arrive at the camp in time for lunch before departing for an afternoon game drive returning to the camp as the sun sets.
Early morning game drive is followed by breakfast and time to relax by the river’s bank. After lunch there will be a further game drive and a sundowner before returning to the camp.
